Parent Temperament

Your answers to the lifestyle quiz gives us some insight into your thought processes and how you are likely to run your household and homeschool. People have been categorizing these thought patterns for nearly 2,000 years and in the modern age, we have become very analytical about the process. We won’t delve into all the complexities involved in stereotyping personalities. We will keep it pretty simple here.

Before talking about your results, there are a few key points to keep in mind.

These characteristics are called temperaments. They are believed to be innate in your character (possibly in your DNA) and aren’t changeable. They are evident in children at an early age and tend to be consistent throughout a person’s life.

Your temperament only indicates your preference or habitual response. It doesn’t define who you are. You are a unique personality and make your own independent choices. Don’t feel typecast by these descriptions!

In various times and circumstances, everyone expresses characteristics of other temperaments. While the temperaments may describe your “normal” behavior, you may take on a different persona in a work situation than in a social situation.

Having said that, the reason this ancient concept has stuck around is that people see a lot of consistency in personality types over time. They are useful methods to clarify your standard way of operating.

These are especially useful because in the midst of homeschooling, in a relaxed environment, you are likely to revert to your innate temperament. More than any other factor, your temperament (and your spouse’s temperament) controls your lifestyle and the way you will operate your homeschool.

The original names of these temperaments are based on a flawed understanding of how the body operated. Since the original names are unflattering, we’ve adopted a more recent variation based on common animals that are a little less objectionable. Keep in mind these are just names that help relate to the temperaments. We aren’t intending to associate you with an animal in any real sense.

These are the animal archetypes:

Beaver

Golden Retriever

Lion

Otter

By means of these quizzes, we will evaluate your temperament and that of your children. Your temperament will give you certain advantages and disadvantages in homeschooling your children. We’ll provide you with specific information on your temperament and if you’ve completed a profile for your children, we’ll tell you how their temperament is likely to affect their learning style. Finally, we’ll try to draw some correlations between your temperament and those of your children to help you identify how you can best help each personality type.
